Women's Golf Makes NCAAs, Places 11th at Regionals

The University of Florida women's golf team qualified for the NCAA Championships on Saturday by shooting an 18-over-par score of 306 in the final round of the NCAA East Regional Championships, finishing in 11th place with a three-round score of 915. Florida finished 18 strokes behind tournament champion Duke. The tournament was held at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course (Par 72/ 6,037 yards).
The top 11 teams this weekend reached the NCAA Championship field. It will be head coach Jill Briles-Hinton's (pictured left) first appearance in her two-year stint at UF. Florida will be playing in the NCAA Championships for the 15th time in program history.
Freshman Brittany Straza (Ft. Myers, Fla./ Lehigh) led the Lady Gators individually, shooting a 5-over-par 77 on Saturday, finishing in a tie for 17th place with a tournament total of 225. She finished nine strokes behind tournament champions Lisa Strom of Ohio State and Kari Damron of Purdue, who shot 216 for the tournament.
Fellow freshmen Paula Marti (Barcelona, Spain/ Saddlebrook Prep) and Sam Zausner White (Rockville, Md./ Bullis) both carded 4-over-par rounds of 76. Marti finished in a tie for 28th place with a total of 228, while Zausner White tied for 40th place with a score of 230. Freshman Jeanne Cho (Boulogne, France/ St. Stephen's Episcopal) shot a 4-over-par 76 and tied for 52nd with a total of 232. Junior Dana von Louda carded an 8-over-par 80 on Saturday and is in a tie for 101st place with a total of 241.
"I'm proud of this team," said Briles-Hinton. "They rose to the occasion and played like Gators should play. The future looks very bright for Florida women's golf."
The top 11 finishers at the East Regionals will combine with the top 13 finishers at the West Regionals at the NCAA Championships, held May 24-27 in Sun River, Oregon. The tournament will be played at the Sun River Resort (Par 72/ 6,502 yards).
