Gary Koch Invitational
Men's Golf Fifth After First Round Of Gary Koch
Monday, October 14, 2002 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team is currently in fifth-place after the first round of competition at the Cleveland Golf/Gary Koch Invitational in Tampa, Fla. The Gators fired a three-under par 285 after the first 18 holes Monday at Old Memorial Golf Course.
The second round was suspended due to lightning and will resume Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. with a shotgun start.
Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) led Florida with a three-under 69. The 2001-02 Golfweek/Titleist Junior Golfer of the Year, Vargas led the Gators with the lowest score following the first round of the NCAA Preview last week.
Junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) was the other Gator to shoot in the red, as he shot a 70 (-2). Villegas is looking to defend his individual medalist title in the Koch Invitational from a year ago.
Senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) fired an even-par 72. Fellow senior Dalton Melnyk (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) each shot 74s (+2) to round out the Gators' top five. Redshirt sophomore Robert Litsey (Palatka, Fla.) competed as an individual player in the tournament and turned in a six-over 78.
Ohio State is in first at 279 (-9), with Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky in second at 282 (-6). Tennessee is in third at five-under (283), while College of Charleston is in fourth at 284 (-4).
