UFSwimmers Complete Day One of Southern States

Members of the University of Florida men's swimming team have completed the first day of competition at Southern States, hosted by the University of North Florida. The Gators will not compete for score in the three-day event.
Florida began with the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, with Will Ratliff, Jesus Dominguez, Oliver Heinricher and Chris Dwyer combining to turn in a time of 1:25.18. In the 500-yard freestyle, Steve Friedlander clocked in at 4:31.57 for Florida's best time. Heinricher finished in 4:33.12 and Dominguez touched the wall in 4:33.43. Matt Yacco rounded out the event with a time of 4:38.40.
In the 200-yard individual medley, freshman Corey Welch qualified for the championship final and finished in 1:54.45. In the consolation final of the 200-yard IM, Bernie Guenther finished in 1:54.95, while Jonathan Strauss clocked in at 1:55.82.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Ratliff turned in a time of 21.33, and Chris Dwyer clocked in at 23.12. Florida ended the night with the 400-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 3:27.56.
Southern States continues Friday and will conclude Saturday. The Gators then travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Southeastern Conference Championships.
