UF Leader After Second Day of Lady Gator Invite
Saturday, February 23, 2002 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team took sole possession of first place Saturday after the rain-soaked second round of the 2002 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational. Junior Brittany Straza shot a second-round 71 and once again paced the Gators, who have an eight-stroke lead heading into the final day of competition. Florida has a two-day total of 600, followed by Georgia, which recorded a two-round 608.
"I'm so proud of these athletes," said Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. "They didn't let the elements get to them. It was very hard today. They proved to themselves that they can do it, that they can play with the best in the country. They fought for everything."
Straza's two-round total of 144 puts her in second place in the individual scoring, five strokes behind LSU's Meredith Duncan (69-70--139). Junior Jeanne Cho moved into a tie for sixth place, carding a two-round 149 (75-74), while freshman Andrea Vander Lende is tied for 13th with a 153 (74-79). Joy Stephenson and Whitney Code are tied for 31st place, turning in two-round totals of 157.
Florida's Sam Zausner White and Amanda Dick carded two-round scores of 156 to finish tied for 24th place. Senior Kim Best rounded out scoring for the Gators with a 161, which puts her in a tie for 53rd. White, Dick and Best are competing as individuals in this tournament.
Florida will try to hold on to the lead and win the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational for the second time in three years. The Gators won the 2000 installment of the Lady Gator Invitational.
Sunday's final round begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
