Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at SEC Championships

The University of Florida women's golf team finished in sixth place at the SEC Championships Sunday, shooting a three-round 897. South Carolina won its first SEC women's golf championship, shooting an 861 to defeat Auburn by three strokes. South Carolina's Kristy McPherson won the individual title, shooting a seven-under-par 209 for the tournament.

"We're a young team, and we're maturing. I know the players learned a lot," said UF Head Coach Jill Briles-Hinton. "They played with some great players and competed against some of the best teams in the country. I think we're all disappointed, but we have to stay focused and committed to our goals. We're going to go back and rest and work on some specific areas in everyone's game to get ready for regionals."

For Florida, freshman Whitney Code (Tampa, Fla.) and junior Jeanne Cho (Boulogne, France) both finished tied for 18th place at 223. Junior Brittany Straza (Ft. Myers, Fla.) shot a 225 for the tournament, finishing tied for 22nd. Freshman Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) finished 28th with a three-round 227, while sophomore Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) shot a 232 to finish tied for 35th.

Florida will now wait for the selection for NCAA regional play. The Gators will travel to Baton Rouge, La., East Lansing, Mich. or Stanford, Calif., from May 9-11. The top eight teams from each regional will then travel to Auburn, Wash., to compete for the NCAA Championship title May 21-24.
