Men's Golf Moves To Second At Carpet Capital
Saturday, October 4, 2003 | Men's Golf
Four of five players shot rounds under par as the No. 1 University of Florida men's golf team combined for an 11-under 277 to move into second place on Saturday at the 2003 Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.
In finishing at 11-under for the day, the Gators tied for the 11th-best single-round score by par in school history. Despite the successful day, Florida still trails defending national champion Clemson by four strokes, as the Tigers boast a two-round total of 568 (-9) to the Gators' 572 (-4).
"I was pleased with the way we played today," coach Buddy Alexander said. "Everybody played solid and we're just a few strokes behind. We'll need to have all five guys play well tomorrow, but I think we're capable and we're within striking distance and that's what you want to see."
The Gators were led by senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) and freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) who are both tied for eighth with scores of 142 (-2) after two rounds at the par 72, 7,010-yard course. Mudd fired off the best round of his career with a 68 (-4), which included six birdies and an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole. Villegas finished the day at two-under with a score of 70 as the All-American is looking for his third top 20 finish in as many tries this season.
After carding a four-over 76 on Friday, sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) rebounded to shoot a season-best 68 (-4) on Saturday to stand at even-par entering Sunday's final round. He led all Florida players on Saturday by sinking seven birdies and is tied for 20th.
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) was the fourth Gator to end the day under par as he carded his best round of the season with a one-under 71. His two-day total of 145 (+1) put him in a tie for 24th.
Sophomore James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) rounded up the field of Gators after shooting a 74 to put himself in a tie for 41st at five-over after the first two rounds.
