The University of Florida women's golf team is currently in seventh place after shooting a second-round 13-over-par 297 to finish the day with a score of 608 (311-297) at the NCAA Central Regional Friday held at the Firethorn Golf Club (par71/6,033 yards) in Lincoln, Neb. With the first round of action canceled Thursday due to heavy rain, the 21-team field played 36 holes today. The Lady Gators got off to a slow start, finishing the first round in ninth place after shooting a 311. Florida came back in the second round as all five Florida golfers lowered their scores to finish the day in seventh place with a 297.
"The first round was a struggle for us, but we re-grouped and posted a decent score in the second round," head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "Tomorrow we need to take it one shot at a time and stay focused. Everyone knows what is at stake. We need to stay relaxed and have fun."
Senior Jeanne Cho (Boulogne, France) and sophomore Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) led the way for the Lady Gators as they are both tied for 24th place, carding an eight-over-par 150. Cho shot a first round six-over-par 77, but dropped her score by four strokes as she shot a two-over-par 73 later in the afternoon. Vander Lende finished the first round tied for 22nd with a five-over-par 76. In the second round she birdied holes five and 10 to shoot a three-over-par 74.
Freshman Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) is tied for 27th place, carding a nine-over-par 151. Cho birdied the fourth hole in both rounds as she finished the first round at five-over-par 76 and the second round at four-over-par 75. Junior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) shot an 11-over-par 82 in the first round, but dropped six strokes to tie for 62nd place with a two-round 158 (82-76). Freshman Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) also struggled in the first round with a 13-over-par 84, but she also came back in the second round by dropping nine strokes to finish the day tied for 68th place with a 159 (84-75).
The third and final round will begin Saturday morning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. The top eight teams and top two individuals will advance to the 2003 NCAA Championships to be held at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. Live scoring of the final round is available at www.golfstat.com.
