Men's Golf In Seventh Place At NCAA Championships
Wednesday, May 28, 2003 | Men's Golf
The No. 2 University of Florida men's golf team is in seventh at 302 (+14) following the first day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Championships at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla. The Gators are only three strokes behind the first round leaders Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Clemson and Auburn, who all carded an opening round 299 (+11).
"I'm pleased with how we played in the first round," Gator Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "We have not gotten off to good starts in the first round of several tournaments this season, so this is a good sign for us to be in contention early on."
The Gators top golfer in the first round was junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia), who is tied for fifth with seven other golfers at even-par (72). Villegas, a 2003 All-Southeastern Conference second-team selection, got off to a good start on the front nine holes, as he shot a three-under 33 before slipping on the back nine with a 39 (+3).
Freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) is right behind Villegas, as he is also part of an eight-way tie for 13th with a +1 (73). Fellow freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) is the next Gator on the leaderboard, as he is in 44th place at +4 with a first round 76.
Senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) is tied for 106th with a nine-over 81. Freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) is tied for 125th at +11, as he turned in an opening round 83.
The second round of the NCAA Championships will begin Wednesday at 9 a.m.
