The No. 3 Florida men's golf team shot a first round 292 (+12) to sit in a tie for fourth place entering the final day of competition at the NCAA Preview by Ping and Golfweek on Monday at Cascades Course at The Homestead Resort.
Teams were originally scheduled to complete two rounds on Monday, but due to inclement weather, the tournament will be shortened to 36 holes with the final round on Tuesday morning. Top-ranked and defending national champion Clemson leads the field of 15 teams after carding a 287 (+7) on the par 70, 6,679-yard course. Augusta State is three shots back at 290, while North Carolina is third at 291. The Gators are tied with Wake Forest at 292. Kevin Silva of North Carolina leads the tournament after a first-round score of 68 (-2).
"It was a tough day to play," Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. "It rained all day and was pretty windy as well. But at the same time, we're still in the tournament and hope to improve and play better tomorrow when the weather clears up."
Senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) continued his solid early season play after tying for second last weekend at the Bank of Tennessee by finishing the afternoon with a one-over 71 to sit in a tie for sixth with four others. Villegas was four-over after the first 10 holes, but responded with three birdies in the final eight holes.
After finishing in a tie for 66th at the Bank of Tennessee to open the fall season, sophomore Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) rebounded to shoot a 72 (+2) to stand in a tie for 11th entering the final round.
Freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) was the next highest Gator after carding an opening round of 74 (+4). After bogeying five straight holes on the front nine, Mudd regrouped with four birdies on the back nine to finish the day tied for 29th.
Coming off a top-10 finish at the Bank of Tennessee, sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) was right behind Mudd with a five-over 75 – good enough to tie him for 36th.
Sophomore James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) rounded out the Gators and is tied for 46th with a six-over 76 after the first day.
