Senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) carded a season best round of 67 as Florida moved up three spots into second place Monday afternoon entering the final day of competition at the Puerto Rico Classic at the Western Rio Mar Country Club.
Florida shot an 11-under 277 in the second round, which ties for the seventh best round by par in school history. The Gators moved up from fifth after carding a 289 Sunday. Florida trails Oklahoma (563) for first by three strokes entering the final day of competition Tuesday. The Gators have a four shot lead on third-place Clemson (570).
"Today was a big day for us," Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. "We just keep rolling along. To a small degree, we had our backs against the wall and we got it done today. We've got a chance to win tomorrow and we'll see what happens."
Matt Hendrix of Clemson is the individual leader entering the final round after shooting 70 in the first round and 67 Monday at the ocean course (par 72, 6,782 yards) for a two-day total of 137 (-7).
