Tuesday, March 30, 2004 | Men's Golf
Senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) is in a tie for second at eight-under though two rounds, while the No. 1 ranked Florida men's golf team built a 10-stroke lead entering the final round after play at the Atlanta Intercollegiate on Monday at Eagles Landing Country Club.
Florida trailed by one stroke after carding a first round score of 279 (-9), which the Gators followed up with a 276 (-11), which ties a season-best score by par and ties for the 11th-best score by par in school history. Florida set the school record at the event last season by finishing at 828 (-36) for the tournament. Clemson (565) was 10 shots back in second with Georgia (566), South Carolina (567) and Alabama (570) rounding out the top five at the par 72, 6,899-yard course. The Gators are looking for their seventh win of the season, which would be the second most in school history.
"From our end it was a pretty solid day with lots of birdies and eagles." Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. "It was kind of a crazy shootout and we had some bogies that we'd like to avoid, but I'm not going to try and change the aggressive nature of our team unless some of the other teams get ahead of us. We'll come out again tomorrow and hope for the best."
Villegas was one of three Gators to finish in the top 10 after the first day. He carded a first-round score of 69 (-3) and shot a 67 (-5) in the second to trail Clemson's Jack Ferguson (136) by one entering Tuesday's final round. His second-round score tied a season-best and marked the eighth consecutive round Villegas has posted an even or under par score.
Freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) is in good position to earn his second consecutive top-10 finish after ending day one with a six-under 138. He shot a pair of 69s to match his previous best score in the spring season add bring his total to 14 even or under par rounds this year.
In the hunt for his eighth top-10 finish of the season, sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) fell next in line for Florida after carding two 70s to end the day at four-under and in a tie for sixth. Every has now been even or under par in 10 consecutive rounds and has 19 total for the season.
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) is in a tie for 22nd at 144 (E) after opening day rounds of 71 (-2) and 73 (+1). His first-round score was his 11th even or under par round this season and gives Stegmaier a chance at his third top-20 finish in the last four tournaments.
Sophomore Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.) rounded out the Gators in a tie for 43rd at 149 (+5). After a tough opening round 79 (+7), Cochran rebounded to post his third under par round this year and his best round of the spring with a 70 (-2) in the second round.
The third and final round of the Atlanta Intercollegiate will be played on Tuesday with tee times set for 8 a.m. Upon completion of the round, results will be posted at www.georgiastatesports.com
