After day one of the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships, the No. 12 University of Florida women's golf team is in seventh place after carding a 302 at the University Club Course (par 72, 6,285 yards).
"We have our work cut out for us tomorrow," Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "We didn't do as well as we should have. We should be under 300 on this course."
Defending SEC Champion Auburn is in the lead with a score of 292. Vanderbilt is right on the Tigers' heels with a score of 295. Tennessee is in third place with a score of 296 followed by Arkansas (297) and Georgia (298) to round out the top five.
Sophomore Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) is in the hunt for her second consecutive SEC individual title as she is tied for third place with a score of 72. Cho carded two birdies on the back nine, giving her a one-under par for holes 10-18.
"I'm really pleased with Aimee's performance today," Briles-Hinton said. "She has a chance to defend her title. Aimee played solid."
Junior Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) carded a 75 for the first round with a strong front nine performance (+1). Vander Lende sank a long putt to birdie on hole five and fired another birdie on hole six. On hole 17, Vander Lende fired her third birdie of the day, helping her to tie for 19th place.
Sophomore Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) carded a 76 after 18 holes to tie for 27th. Gonzalez birdied on holes 11 and 12, but bogeyed four holes on the back nine.
"Camila has to work really hard and she is doing everything she can to help the team," Briles-Hinton said.
The three-day tournament, hosted by LSU, continues through Sunday. The Lady Gators tee off at 9:20 a.m. (CT) on the 10th hole.
