Lady Gators Sit in Fourth After Day One of Chrysler Challenge

The No. 20 Florida women's golf team notched a fourth-place finish in day one action of the Chrysler Challenge at the par 71, 6,900 yard Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla. All five Lady Gator competitors captured first round finishes in the top-20, while the Orange and Blue trails the leading squad from South Carolina by only seven strokes.
Sophomore captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar) leads the Lady Gators in 12th place after firing a 75, and with her 76-stroke effort, sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) sits in a tie for 15th after round one. Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton was not particularly pleased with her team's play, but felt there were some positives to build on in the next two rounds.
“The bottom line is we played poorly today,” said Briles-Hinton. “There's no way to pinpoint one thing that went wrong, we just looked rusty. We need to come back and do better tomorrow, and I think one positive we can build on from today is that we played so poorly and we're still not too far out of first. Everybody is in the top 20 right now, and we need to work our way up in the next two rounds.”
Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) claimed 17th after shooting a 77 on the day, to sit in a tie with teammates Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.), a sophomore, and redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France).
In the team standings South Carolina sits in first after round one with a score of 297, while Alabama claimed second with a 301 and Mississippi State posted a third place finish after firing 304. Louisiana State and Mississippi each shot a 309 to tie for fifth on the day and tournament host Florida State rounds out the seven-team field after a 310 day one effort.
Action continues at the Raven Golf Club Saturday morning, when the Lady Gators and the rest of the field will hit the course for the second 18 holes of the tourney. A round recap and full results will be available at the conclusion of the day at www.gatorzone.com.
