Lady Gator Golfers Move Up to Second, Finish One Stroke Behind Leader
Monday, October 31, 2005 | Women's Golf
The No. 20 Lady Gator golf team posted a second place finish at the Chrysler Challenge, held at the par 71 6,900 yard Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla. Florida moved up one spot from its day two finish at the tourney and overcame a 20 stroke deficit to finish just one stroke behind tournament champion South Carolina, with a 904.
Sophomore captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar), who led the way for the team through all three rounds, notched a third-place finish with a score of 222 (75-73-74). Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) and freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) finished in a tie for 10th, each shooting a three round total of 227. Gal improved her score from the previous two rounds by one stroke (76-76-75), while Blackwelder shaved four strokes in the final round (77-77-73).
Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.), shot a three-round total of 228 (77-76-75) to finish in a tie for 14th, while redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) fired a 231 (77-77-77) to finish in 20th. Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton was pleased with the team's effort to improve on the first two days, but still felt the Lady Gators performed at a mediocre level.
“South Carolina opened the door for us to take the win, but we didn't capitalize,” said Briles-Hinton. “We were hitting the ball well today, we just didn't get it done. I'm proud of the effort the team made, not one of them shot above a 77 this weekend, so there was no shortage of effort on our part.”
“We didn't have anyone shooting low for us in any of the rounds,” Briles-Hinton continued. “If we can continue to be consistent and get one or two people to shoot low rounds for us in every tournament we'll do well.”
South Carolina edged the Lady Gators by one stroke after taking a 20-stroke lead into the final round of play. The Gamecocks finished with a 903 to take the title, while the Orange and Blue claimed second with 904. Alabama notched a third-place finish with a 911 total, Louisiana State finished fourth with a 916 and Mississippi State took fifth with a 920. Tournament host Florida State shot a 928 to finish sixth and Ole Miss rounded out the field with a 936 effort, good for a seventh place finish.
The Lady Gator golf team returns to action next weekend for the Auburn Derby Nov. 4-6. The Derby will be held at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala., and will feature a field of 17 teams, including eight from the Southeastern Conference.
