W. Golf Drops Round One, Leads in Round Two of Hooters Match Play

The No. 24 ranked Lady Gator golf squad dropped a close 3-2-0 match to 6th seeded Texas A&M in round one action of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, but built a strong lead over Furman in round two before play was suspended due to darkness at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Sophomore Tiffany Chudy (Miramar) and freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky) each defeated her respectful Texas A&M opponent in round one. Chudy defeated Brenda Norris, 3 and 2, while Blackwelder downed Jacquelyn Nemcik, 3 and 2 as well. Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) dropped a tough match to Ashley Knoll (1-up) after the pair was tied heading into the final hole.
Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) dropped her match 3 and 2 to A&M's Christa Spedding, while redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) lost a close match 2 and 1 to Lauren Johnson. Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton felt her team played well in the first round, in spite of the winless outcome.
“We played solid in the morning round,” said Briles-Hinton. “We just couldn't get the putts to fall our way when we needed them to.”
The Orange and Blue moved into the consolation bracket of the Match Play for round two, where they faced 14th-seeded Furman. Second round action was suspended due to darkness, but the Lady Gators have the edge in the match, which will continue Saturday morning.
“Ornella has already won her second round match, 6 and 5,” said Briles-Hinton. “Whitney and Mallory are both two up right now and Sandra and Tiffany are up one. Everyone is past the 14th hole, so hopefully we'll win out tomorrow morning and keep playing in round three.”
Round three action is slated to begin at the Mission Inn Resort at 10 a.m., following the continued play of round two which will begin at 8 a.m. Up to the minute tournament results are available at www.golfstatresults.com, and a round recap as well as Florida results will be posted at www.gatorzone.com following each day of play.
