Men's Golf Tied for Fourth at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships

The No. 18 University of Florida men's golf team carded a four-over par opening round score of 292 at the Sawgrass Country Club to close the first day of the 2005 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship tied for fourth-place with No. 13 UCLA.
Junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) led the Gators by carding a one-under par opening round score of 71. Every, a 2005 Ben Hogan Award candidate, is one shot off the lead and is currently tied for sixth-place.
Playing as an individual, Ponte Vedra native Duke Butler carded an even par score of 72 to close the day in a tie for 13th-place.
The tandem of senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) and junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) closed out the first day of competition by firing a one-over par score of 73, to tie for 27th-place respectively.
By finishing the first round of play with a three-over par score of 75, the duo of Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.) and James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) will start the second day of competition in a tie for 38th-place.
The Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship continues at the Sawgrass Country Club through Tuesday, Feb. 22.
