No. 10 Men's Golf Remains Tied for Seventh-Place at Southern Highlands Collegiate
Sunday, March 13, 2005 | Men's Golf
The No. 10 University of Florida men's golf team had a solid second round behind senior Matt Every's (Daytona Beach, Fla.) five-under par score of 67 to give Florida a two-over par score of 290 for the day. The Gators who maintained their tie for seventh-place despite their improved play, trail the host No. 15 UNLV by 11 strokes entering the final round of play in the 2005 Southern Highlands Collegiate Championships at the Southern Highlands Golf Club.
"We played the last couple of holes today very poorly," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "Had we performed a little better down the stretch we would be in the hunt for another win, but this is a great field and we know it's tough to win every tournament that you play in."
Continuing to have a solid golf tournament, junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) added a one-over par second round score of 73 to his even par effort of 72 from the first round to sit in a tie for the No. 19 spot overall with a total score of 145.
Remaining consistent was redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany), who fired a two-over score of 74 in the second round to go with his opening round score of 73. With a total of 147 (+3), Treis will begin the final round tied for 30th-place.
Junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) contributed a four-over par score of 76 to his previous round score of 74 to notch a six-over par tournament total of 150. Stegmaier who is looking for his fourth consecutive top-10 finish will begin the final day of play in a tie for 47th-place.
Redshirt freshman Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) shaved a few stroke off his opening round score of 81 to give him a second round tally of 78 (+6). Villegas, who has been challenged by this course, is in 75th-place.
The 2005 Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship concludes tomorrow at the Southern Highlands Golf Club.
