Chris Schenkel Invitational
No. 10 Men's Golf Tied for Eighth-Place at Schenkel
Sunday, March 20, 2005 | Men's Golf
The No. 10 University of Florida men's golf team opened the 2005 Chris Schenkel Invitational by playing 36 of the tournament's 54 holes on Saturday at the Forest Heights Country Club. The Gators had a tough start as they fired a two-round 18-over par score of 594 to sit in an eighth-place tie with No. 3. Georgia.
"Today was the longest day we have had of the spring thus far," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "We dug ourselves into a hole because we didn't play smart and we didn't putt well at all today."
Redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) and junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) led the Gators as each carded a two-over par two-round score of 146. Treis fired a team-best opening 71 (-1) and later added a three-over par round of 75, while Vargas opened with an even-par 72 and closed the day with a two-over par 74. The duo is tied for 16th-place.
Carding rounds of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3), junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) notched a two-round total score of 151, which was good enough to tie for 41st-place.
Junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who is one stroke behind Stegmaier, carded rounds of 78 (+6) and 74 (+2) to enter the final round of play tied for 47th-place.
Having a tough day like many of his teammates, redshirt senior Duke Butler (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) carded a five-over par score of 77 and then returned in the afternoon to fire a six-over par score of 78. Butler will begin the final day tied for 63rd-place.
"We'll have to see if we have the mindset to overcome the hole that we have put ourselves in," Alexander said. "We're not out of it, but we're going to have to play better to improve where we are now."
The 2005 Chris Schenkel Invitational concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes at the Forest Heights Country Club.
