Lady Gators in 12th After First Round of Auburn Derby

After rain showers cancelled Friday's opening round of the 11th Annual Auburn Derby in Auburn, Ala., the University of Florida women's golf team carded a 25-over 313 Saturday to finish round one tied for 12th place. Junior captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) led the Lady Gators with a five-over 77 on the par-72, 6,121-yard Auburn University Club, and will enter Sunday's second and final round tied for 22nd.
“Today was a rough one for us. Unfortunately, no one played very well, and when no one steps up at times such as this, it hurts your team score quite a bit,” said ninth-year head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “We know we're capable of putting together low rounds, and that will be our primary focus when we're on the course Sunday.”
Chudy started the day on the fifth hole and remained at even until a bogey on the par-4, 367-yard ninth hole cost her one stroke. Chudy went on to bogey four additional par fours during the round, but a birdie on the 15th hole allowed her to finish play at five over.
Junior Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) finished two strokes behind teammate Chudy with a six-over 78 to tie for 39th, while junior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) and sophomore Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) each shot a 79 and are tied for 44th.
Redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) rounded out the Lady Gators contingent with a first-round score of 80 and is tied for 55th. Redshirt sophomore C.J. Kim (Rowland Heights, Calif.) recorded an 81 while competing as an individual to tie for 65th.
“We're going to use this evening's down time to regroup and focus on what we need to do tomorrow to move up the leaderboard. This tournament is still anyone's to win, and I plan on seeing a different team with a different mentality out on the course tomorrow morning,” added Briles-Hinton.
In the team standings, North Caroline (301) holds a two-stroke lead over host Auburn (303), and LSU (305) sits fifth among the 17-team field.
The Lady Gators will complete the rain-shortened Derby Sunday morning with a shotgun start that is slated to begin at 8:45 a.m.
