Lady Gator Golfers Defeat South Carolina & Alabama at Hooters Match Play
Saturday, November 4, 2006 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team handed a pair of losses to fellow Southeastern Conference teams during Saturday's second day of the 2006 Hooters Match Play Collegiate Championships in Orlando, Fla.
The No. 10 Lady Gators began Saturday's play by resuming their contest against No. 15 South Carolina, which was postponed Friday evening due to diminishing daylight. Florida pulled off a 2-2-1 win against the Gamecocks as the result of the tiebreaker before following up with a 4-1 win over No. 14 Alabama.
“The team's effort in the second round made me quite proud,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “Match play can work in anyone's favor on any given day, and as a result, anyone can win. The Lady Gators went out there today and did what they needed to do to get the ball in the hole, and that's all I can ask for out of a tournament such as this.”
On Friday afternoon, juniors Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) and Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) carded their wins over South Carolina's Laura Raffo (5 and 3) and Taylor Barreet (4 and 2), respectively, while junior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) fell to Benedicte Toumpsin, 4 and 3.
After resuming play on Saturday morning, redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) was defeated by Blythe Worley, 2 and 1, but sophomore Mallory Blackwelder's (Versailles, Ky.) contest against Whitney Simons was halved, which resulted in the Florida victory.
“Ornella (Jouven) and Mallory (Blackwelder) had to sleep on their performances from Friday and wait until this (Saturday) morning to seal their fates, and that kind of pressure on a golfer really helps determine their competitiveness. No one can teach them what they learned on the golf course today,” said Briles-Hinton.
Gal, Myers, Blackwelder and Jouven each notched wins in the afternoon victory over the Crimson Tide, while Chudy fell to Helena Blomberg, 5 and 4.
The Lady Gators will conclude the 2006 Hooters Match Play Collegiate Championship on the par-73, 7,198-yard Eagle Creek Golf Club with an 8 a.m. contest Sunday against fifth-seeded Wake Forest, which lost its opening contest to No. 12 LSU before recording victories over No. 13 SMU and No. 8 Purdue.
