Myers Leads No. 15 Florida Women Following Round One of the Bryan National
Saturday, April 1, 2006 | Women's Golf
The No. 15 University of Florida women's golf team opened up the Bryan National with a fourth-place round-one showing Friday at the Bryan National Champions Course in Browns Summitt, N.C. Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) currently leads the Lady Gators in the individual standings, as she sits in a tie for fourth-place.
Myers shot an even-par 72 in the first round to earn her fourth-place spot, while sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) claimed a tied for 14th after firing a plus-three 75. Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) shot a 76 for the day to finish in a tie for 25th and freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) sits tied for 30th-place with a first-round total of 77.
Freshman Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) rounds out the Lady Gator five in a tie for 67th after shooting an 81 on the day. Head women's golf coach Jill Briles-Hinton was pleased with the play of the Lady Gators in round one, and feels commitment and focus will be imperative as they try to move up on the leaders during the second day.
“We played pretty solid today in the first round,” said Briles-Hinton. “We lost some (strokes) coming in, but I know if the team can stay focused and committed, especially playeing the holes we lost on today, than tomorrow we will be in good shape.”
“Whitney Myers is playing fantastic for us right now,” Briles-Hinton continued. “The difference between last semester and this semester for us is that we have someone shooting a low number in every round. That's what we want to have happen, if we can have two people shoot a low number than it's a bonus, but if one person can go low and we can have the rest of the team at a 75 or better to complement the low number than that's good, and that's what we're after.”
In the team standings Purdue leads the field after notching a 295 for the day, while Duke sits in second with a 298 and North Carolina State claims third after firing a 299. SEC foe Georgia is currently tied with the Lady Gators in fourth place and Wake Forest is in sixth after shooting a 303 for the day.
The Orange and Blue will look to improve on its round one finish in fourth-place in Saturday's second round, as action resumes at the Bryan Park Champions Course.
