Sunday, April 2, 2006 | Women's Golf
The 15th-ranked University of Florida women's golf team improved on their second round score by 14 strokes with a third day 293 to move up two spots on the leaderboard Sunday at the final round of the Bryan National Collegiate. The Gators finished sixth at the 17-team event with a three-day score of 36-over-par, 900, which was only one stroke behind fifth-place and 11th-ranked Wake Forest, which carded an 899 over the course of 54 holes at the par 72, 6,210-yard Champions Course in Browns Summitt, N.C.
Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) was the team's highest finisher in the individual field with a 13th-place tie after firing a 2-under, 70, on Sunday to finish with a three-day score of 222. Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) also finished below par for the round with a 1-under, 71, to move her 54-hole score to 224.
“We played well today, and I'm proud of our team,” UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “If we didn't have to count our fourth score, we could have easily finished at par as a team. This was a good stepping stone heading into SEC's. We got a confidence boost at this event by playing nine teams that were ranked ahead of us. Fortunately, we finished ahead of a couple of them to help our confidence.”
No. 6 Georgia secured the tournament victory with a third round score of 284 to finish with a collective 11-over, 875, which was five strokes ahead of top-ranked Duke (287-880). Individually, Georgia's Taylor Leon took home medalist honors to make it a clean sweep for the Bulldogs after carding a 3-under, 69, in the final round.
For the Gators, sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) had a three-day grand total of 230 after an 80 in the final round to finish in a tie for 41st, while redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) was one stroke off Myers' pace as she carded a three-round score of 231 after a 79 over the final 18 holes. Freshman Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) improved on her second-round score by six strokes with a 1-over, 73, Sunday to finish with a 54th-place 233.
The Orange and Blue return to action in two weeks at the Southeastern Conference Championships, held at the Legends Club of Tennessee in Nashville. The first round is set for Friday, April 14.
