W. Golf Remains In The Hunt At The NCAA Central Regional

The University of Florida Women's Golf team stayed close to the leaders on the second day of competition at the NCAA Central Regional on Friday. The Gators carded a two round total of 613 (+37) and will head into Saturday's final round in fifth-place.
Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) led the Gators by carding a team-low score of 75 (+3). Jouven started her round on a good note by sinking a birdie putt on the par-4, fourth hole at the Traditions Golf Club. She went on to save par on 11 of the next 14 holes and moved up into a tie for 14th-place.
Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) also stayed close to the top of the leader board by carding a five-over-par score of 77. Myers finished the day tied for 11th and is currently six-over with a two-round total of 150.
Inconsistency spoiled the day for sophomores Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) and Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.). Gal led the team with three birdies during her round, but also recorded a trio of double-bogeys to finish the day with a 79 (+7). Chudy stayed at four-over for most of her round, but carded four bogeys over the final five holes to finish with an 82 (+10). Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) rounded out the lineup by lowering her first round score by two strokes to finish with an 81 (+9).
“We had a tough go around today,” Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “The conditions were nice, but some of the fairways firmed up and the greens were faster. Our girls will have to be patience and play smart tomorrow. Hopefully, it will be enough to get to the nationals.”
The Gators can advance to the NCAA Championship in Columbus, Ohio later this month by finishing in the top-eight at the Central Regional Tournament. Play will commence with the leaders teeing off at 7:40 a.m. (CT). Florida is scheduled to begin playing on the back-nine at that time.
