Jerry Pate (Round Two)
Men's Golf In Contention After Two Rounds At Jerry Pate
Tuesday, October 9, 2007 | Men's Golf
Despite shooting 11-under par as a team in the second round, the University of Florida men's golf team dropped two spots at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, falling to sixth place with 18 holes left in the tournament. Florida shot 280-273 = 553 (-15) Monday, resting 15 strokes behind defending tournament champions and host, Alabama, who are sitting in the clubhouse after 36-holes on top of the field with a team total of 270-268 = 538 (-30).
In a tournament full of low tallies, junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) was one of three players to fire 64 in the second round. He jumped from 12th place to the fourth spot, turning in a scorecard of 68-64 = 132 (-10). The 36-hole total is a career-best for the two-time All-American and his second round score was one stroke shy of matching his career-low 63. Horschel will be the last Gator to tee off on Tuesday, starting at 9:40 a.m. EST from the first tee box.
“It's great to have Billy back in the loop after the Walker Cup,” head coach Buddy Alexander said. “He makes us a more competitive team and has helped put us in a good position for tomorrow.”
Senior Manuel Villegas (Medillin, Colombia) and junior Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) found themselves under-par for the second-consecutive round. Villegas finished the day shooting a 69-70 = 139 (-3), while Ragland followed with back-to-back scores of 70 for 140 (-2). Ragland will tee off from No. 1 at 9:20 a.m. EST with Villegas following ten minutes later.
Freshman Arnond “Bank” Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) bounced back during the evening round, shaving off eight strokes from his opening score of 77 to a two-under 69. He currently sits in a tie for 45th place with a 146 tally. Sophomore Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) wraps-up the Gators card with a 73-74 = 147 (+5) for 49th.
The third round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate will be played Tuesday and Florida golf fans are encouraged to check www.Gatorzone.com for results as they become available.
