The fifth-ranked University of Florida women's golf team fired the low round of the day with a 13-over 301 and pulled within one shot of No. 1 Duke at the 11th annual Bryan Park National Collegiate on Saturday at the Players Course.
The Lady Gators sit in second place at 23-over 599, just one shot behind the Blue Devils, who are at 22-over 598. Duke posted a 304 on Saturday. Florida is five strokes up on No. 11 Auburn, who is in third place at 28-over following a second-round 303.
“Mentally we had to stay strong to get through the conditions,” said UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “They fought hard and didn't give up and that is what they need to do. Our team can't worry about what Duke does. They have to go out and play each shot and not worry about outcomes.”
UF is seeking its third tournament victory of the season and second of the spring. The Lady Gators look to overtake the top-ranked Blue Devils when the final round gets underway at 10 a.m. ET Sunday. Live scoring is available at www.Golfstat.com.
Redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) climbed into the top five individual leaderboard on Saturday following a 3-over 75. Jouven is among three players in a tie for fifth at 3-over through 36 holes. Arkansas' Stacy Lewis took a commanding four-shot lead with a 3-under 69 that put her at 5-under overall.
Jouven opened with a par of the first and then carded her fourth birdie of the weekend with a four on the par-5 second hole. She played her front nine 2-over and registered eight pars to one bogey on her back nine scorecard.
Freshman Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) is in a tie for 14th place with a 4-over 76 in her second round. Yun, who is at 6-over for the tournament, opened with three straight bogeys but answered a 4-over front nine with an even-par back nine that featured birdies on holes 12 and 15.
Three Florida players are tied for 26th position, including freshman Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.), senior Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.).
Myers recorded the low UF round of the day with a 2-over par 74 that vaulted her nearly 30 places. Myers played her first nine holes at 3-over and then rallied with a 1-under back nine. She counted birdies on the par-4 13th and the par-4 16th to go along with six pars on her final nine holes.
“Yesterday's round was uncharacteristic of what she has been shooting this year, but that's golf,” Briles-Hinton said. “She didn't let it get her down. Yesterday she worked on what she needed to work on and came out today and got it done.”
Schachner, playing as an individual, shot a 3-over 75 that was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on the par-4 first and the par-5 second. Yadloczky spelled a 2-over round on Friday with a 7-over 79 on Saturday.
Senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) climbed seven places to a tie for 35th following a 4-over 76. Chudy's round featured a birdie on the par-5 12th.
