Women's Golf Tied for Sixth After Day One of Mason Rudolph
Friday, September 26, 2008 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team is currently tied for sixth place after completing day one at the Mason Rudolph Women's Championships on Friday. The Lady Gators played an impressive first-round and set a new season low round score with a four-over 292.
“This is the first time that a lot of our players have ever seen this course and I think that they got a really good look at it today,” UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “We have just as much of a chance as any team to do well in this tournament. If they just take it one shot at a time and stick with their mental game, they will do well here.”
The squad was led by sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Bradenton, Fla.) who had a strong showing in round one, carding a one-under 71, good for a tie for sixth place. She collected five birdies, 10 pars, two bogeys and one double bogey on the afternoon. One year ago, Yadloczky made her collegiate debut at the Mason Rudolph and eventually finished the tournament in fifth place.
“At one point Jessica got to three-under par,” said Briles-Hinton. “She made a lot of birdies out there, but had a little trouble toward the end. Overall, she played a fantastic round of golf today.”
Redshirt junior Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and true freshman Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) both recorded a one-over 73 in the first round. With the 73, Nelson tied a career low, matching her score at the 2007 Wildcat Fall Invitational and 2006 Bryan National Collegiate. Jensen had another strong showing for the Lady Gators, collected three birdies on the day. The Florida duo is currently tied for 23rd.
Sophomore Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) is currently in a tie for 40th after carding a three-over 75. Yun was even going into the back nine, but made three bogeys on the final stretch. Freshman Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) concluded the first round of play with a 78 (+6) on the scorecard and tied for 58th place. She collected two birdies and was one of four Lady Gator golfers to birdie the 14th hole.
Redshirt sophomore Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.) had a tough start, bogeying her first three holes and tallying bogeys on three of her final six holes to finish the day one with an 85 (+13). Uzelatz, competing as an individual, will enter the second round in 88th place.
Oklahoma State is currently in first place, carding a two-under 286 team score. Auburn's Candace Schepperle and Duke's Amanda Blumenherst sit atop the individual leaderboard with a first-round score of 67 (-5).
Second-round action begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ET. Live scoring can be followed on ww.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com.
