Friday, October 16, 2009 | Women's Golf
The 8th-ranked UF women's golf team finished the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship in a tie for seventh place. The Gators carded a team score of 304 (+16) at the par-72, 6,317-yard Fox Den Country Club.
“A couple of our golfers struggled but I think we finished fairly well,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “We are still looking to win this tournament. The good news is that we have lots of tough competitors on this team who will fight back tomorrow. We still have two more days and we were able to learn a lot about this golf course. So we still have 36 holes left to improve on and see how well we can finish.”
Freshman Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Jessica Yadloczky (Bradenton, Fla.) led the Gators on Friday, both carding a two-over 74 to tie for 14th place. Lendl entered the turn at one-over after a bogey on four, and was able to sandwich two bogeys with two birdies before making a bogey on her final hole. After carding three bogeys on her first six holes, Yadloczky rallied back to notch nine consecutive pars before making a birdie on her 16th hole.
Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) and Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) also matched first round scores as the sophomores are tied for 54th after shooting six-over 78 in their first rounds. Jensen collected two double bogeys, two bogeys and a birdie in her first nine holes to enter the turn at five over. She made a final bogey on her 11th hole and went on to card eight-straight pars to finish at six-over. Watts tallied bogies on her first and fourth holes to enter the turn at two-over, but added a bogey on 10 and 14 and a double bogey on her 15th hole.
Freshman Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) rounded out Florida's lineup in a tie for 63rd after carding a 79 (+7) in her first round.
Tournament host Tennessee is currently atop of the team leaderboard after the Lady Vols carded a 283 (-5) team score.
