W. Golf Finish Seventh At Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship
Sunday, October 18, 2009 | Women's Golf
The Florida women's golf team claimed a seventh place finish at the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships at the Fox Den Country Club on Sunday. The Gators finished the tournament with a team score of 902 (304-295-303, +38).
“I'm obviously disappointed with where we finished,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “We had a good thing going yesterday and we got off to a good start today but in the middle of the round, they just fell off the train a little and could not recover. But I'll tell you what – this team is really talented. They just need to believe in themselves and work hard. That's what it comes down to, belief and getting better in their short game.”
Freshman Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) continued to lead the Gators for the third-consecutive round. Lendl, who made her first appearance in a stroke-play tournament in Knoxville, showed her consistency as the was just one stroke away from her second round score as she carded a one-over 73 on Sunday. Her 54-hole total score of 219 (74-72-73, +3) placed her in a tie for eighth, her first-career top-10 finish.
“I'm really proud of Isabelle,” said Dowling. “The golf course played tough all week and she managed the heck out of her game. She played really smart golf and never got ahead of herself. This was her first stroke-play tournament as a Gator and she did really well. She should be proud of herself and I know this is only a sign of things to come from her.”
Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) was a reliable contributor for the Gators as she finished the tournament in a tie for 15th after carding a tournament total score of 223 (74-73-76, +7). The junior entered the turn at one-under par after collected three birdies and two bogeys, however she added three bogeys in her first six holes after making the turn. She finished her final round with a double bogey on 18.
Sophomore Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) saved her best for last as she had her best round on Sunday, carding a two-over 74. Jensen finished in a tie for 29th with a 54-hole score of 227 (78-75-74, +11). The 2009 All-Freshman Team selection had the most birdies among her teammates as she collected eight this weekend.
Freshman Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) tied for 66th after her third-round score of 80 (+8) gave her a total score of 234 (79-75-80, +18). Sophomore Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) finished with a final score of 243 (78-82-83, +27) to finish in a tie for 85th.
Tournament host Tennessee finished the event in first place after carding a team total of 868 (283-291-294, +4). The Lady Vols had three golfers finish in the top-10, including Nathalie Mansson, who finished in a tie for the lead after carding a 213 (71-71-71, -3). Mansson joined Louisville's Laura Anderson who also scored a 213 (72-70-71, -3).
The Gators will tee off for their final tournament on their 2009 fall slate on Oct. 26-28 for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Las Vegas, Nev. Please visit www.GatorZone.com or www.golfstat.com for live scoring and updated results.
