Sunday, September 27, 2009 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team improved its team score by three strokes, carding a one-over 289 in the final round of the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship on Sunday in Franklin, Tenn. The Gators finished the tournament in 14th place after scoring a 581 (292-281, +5).
“What it really came down to was making putts,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “We were playing against the best teams in the country and I actually think that we are fortunate that this weekend happened when it did. It was an eye-opener for us. Ultimately, when a team is competing against the best teams in the nation, the name of the game is making a ton of birdies and making putts. I think we know what we need to work on and we will get better and learn from this experience.”
After all play on Saturday was postponed due to weather, the event was shortened to 36-holes and Sunday served as the final round.
Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) had the best finish among Gators for the second-consecutive round in Tennessee. The sophomore carded a two-under 70 on Sunday for a 36-hole score of 139 (69-70, -5) to tie for seventh place. Jensen did not make a bogey in her second round and only collected one in two rounds of play. She made birdies on her seventh and 16th holes on Sunday.
Sophomore Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) was one of three Gator golfers to improve her score in Sunday's second round. Watts was even-par through five holes before making a birdie on her sixth. She entered the turn at one-under but made a bogey on her 15th hole to finish at even-par. Watts posted a two-round score of 145 (73-72, +1) to finish in a tie for 40th.
Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) finished in a tie for 56th after carding a total score of 147 (73-74, +3). The sophomore collected two birdies and four bogeys on Sunday's final round. Junior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) cut four strokes off her previous score on Sunday, carding a one-over 73. After making a bogey on her second hole, Yadloczky displayed her consistency, tallying 16 consecutive pars. She finished the event in a tie for 71st with a 150 (77-73, +6).
Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) finished the event with a final score of 156 (79-77, +12) to tie for 85th place. Piccio collected two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey in her final round.
Southern California took home the team title after posting an impressive total score of 16-under 560 (278-282). The Trojans' Jennifer Song claimed the individual crown by three strokes, carding a 36-hole score of 132 (66-66, -12). UCLA and Auburn took home second and third place after carding 562 (-14) and 563 (-13), respectively.
The Gators travel to Knoxville, Tenn. on Oct. 16-18 for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the Fox Den Country Club. Visit www.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com for live scoring and updated results.
