Women's Golf Resumes Play on Day Two of Tar Heel Invitational
Saturday, October 9, 2010 | Women's Golf
The UF women's golf team dropped to 14th place after the second day of the Tar Heel Invitational. The Gators posted a team score of 301 (+13) Saturday which leaves them with an overall team score of 589 (288-301, +13).
“As a team, we did not get off to the greatest start and unfortunately, that kind of set the tone for us all day,” Florida Head Coach Jan Dowling said. “We got into a hole right away and we never really got out of it. We need to make conservative choices with targets and swing confidently tomorrow.”
The Gators were led by sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) who moved up 18 spots from yesterday into a tie for 36th overall after firing a one-under 71. The Philippines native bogeyed her second hole but buried birdie putts on the seventh and ninth to enter the turn at one-under. She added birdies on 12 and 15 to get to three-under before finishing her round with bogeys on 17 and 18.
“She had been struggling with her ball-striking but it started to click for her today which is great,” Dowling said. “Her score was not indicative of how well she played today. Hopefully this will be some great momentum for her heading into her final round and the rest of fall.”
Junior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) carded Florida's second-lowest score of the day, shooting a two-over 74, leaving her tied for 22nd with a 36-hole score of 144 (E). Jensen started slowly with a double bogey on her opening hole and went birdie-bogey on the third and fourth before settling down and completing the front nine with five straight pars. After a bogey on 10, she birdied 13 and followed a bogey on 15 with her third birdie of the afternoon on 17. A day after struggling on the par-5's, Jensen was three-under on the four par-5's Saturday.
“Evan grinded pretty hard today,” Dowling said. “She doubled the first hole and hung in there all day and made some putts. She birdied the 17th hole to get back to two-over so she grinded pretty hard today.”
Senior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) began the second round with a bogey on No. 1 but then ran off nine consecutive pars and was one-over through 10. From there, she bogeyed four consecutive holes along with 18 as she concluded the round with a six-over 78 for a cumulative score of 150 (72-78,+6) which landed her in a tie for 61st on the leaderboard.
Sophomore Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) double bogeyed her first hole and then made eight consecutive pars to head to the back nine at two-over. Bogeys on 10, 12, 14 and 18 dropped Lendl to a six-over 78 for the day and her total score is 149 (71-78, +5) which puts her in a tie for 57th place.
Junior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) had one birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and a triple bogey en route to a eight-over 80 and her 36-hole score of 155 (75-80, +11) places her 84th overall.
Sunday's final round will have a shotgun start where all players will tee off simultaneously from different holes at 9:15 a.m.
