Gators Win 11 Events To Conclude UCF Invitational
Sunday, March 28, 2010 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field team captured 11 events and set numerous personal-bests on Saturday to highlight a highly-successful day at the UCF Invitational at the UCF Track and Field Complex in Orlando, Fla.
The UCF Invitational marked the first meet of the outdoor season for many of the Florida competitors after an impressive indoor campaign that saw both the men's and women's squads post top-four national finishes, including the men's 2010 NCAA Indoor Championship. Saturday's competition also marked the final tune-up before the Pepsi Florida Relays begin this coming Friday.
“I thought we got a lot of good things done this weekend,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “I was really pleased with the effort and focus of our team. Sometimes it's hard to come out and perform with complete focus after the roller coaster of emotions we were on during the indoor season. I thought we did a great job with that this weekend. I can attribute that to our focus and the hard work of our athletes and staff. We just have to keep working to get better to be at our absolute best at championship time. We have a lot of great teams and individuals coming into Florida Relays and I think it will be a great test for us next weekend.”
Freshman sprinter Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.) continued his stellar freshman campaign, winning the men's 100-meter dash (10.57) and the men's 200-meter dash (20.80). The men's sprint corps was extremely impressive as five Gators placed among the top six in the 100-meter dash and four were among the top eight in the 200-meter dash.
Senior sprinter Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.), in his first meet of the 2010 outdoor season was second in the 200-meter dash (20.93) and fourth in the 100-meter dash (10.67). Rankin was second in the 100m (10.58), while sophomore sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.), running his first collegiate 200m, placed fourth in 21.17.
Both Florida 4x100-meter relay teams captured victories on Saturday. The women's team, consisting of Madison McNary (Clearwater, Fla.), Alishea Usery (St. Louis, Mo.), Danielle Williams (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) finished in a time of 45.39.
The men's team finished just outside of the school's all-time top 10 in the event, clocking a 39.37. The relay group consisted of Jeremy Rankin (Aurora, Colo.), Jeremy Hall (Jacksonville, Fla.), Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) and Demps.
Sophomore thrower Keely Medieros (Luziana, Brazil) opened the day by winning the women's discus with a personal-record toss of 49.28m/161-8, while freshman Kaitlin Davis (Niceville, Fla.) was fifth with a personal-record throw of 44.36m/145-6.
Medeiros followed up later in the day with a victory in the women's shot put with a winning toss of 16.07m/52-8.75.
Alishea Usery turned in a personal-record time in placing second in the women's 200m dash in 23.94 (+0.1). That eclipsed her previous personal best of 23.96 recorded last season. McNary and Williams placed sixth and seventh in that event, respectively.
Junior pole vaulter Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) won the women's pole vault event with a mark of 3.80m/12-5.50, while sophomore Claire Spurling (Jacksonville , Fla.) was second with a mark of 3.50m/11-5.75.
Senior middle distance runner Carlos Phillips (Winter Park, Fla.) won the men's 400-meter dash in a personal-record time of 47.28, while Preston Wilson (Orlando, Fla.) was second in a time of 47.54. Phillips bettered his previous personal best of 47.66 in the 400m dash recorded in 2007.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team won its event in a time of 3:05.99. The squad was comprised of R.J. Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.), McQuay, Phillips and Smith. The women's 4x400m, consisting of Michelle Stegall (Fayetteville, Ga.), Ashley Usery (St. Louis, Mo.), Williams and Ije Iheoma (Holland, Pa.) was third in 3:43.97.
Freshman distance runner Mandy Perkins (Ormond Beach, Fla.) claimed the women's 1,500m run in a time of 4:37.09.
Junior hurdler Jarius Cooper (Palm Coast, Fla.) won the men's 110-meter hurdles by clocking a time of 14.85 (-2.7).
Florida returns to action this weekend when it plays host to the 66th Pepsi Florida Relays April 2-3 at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.
