Women's Golf In Fifth After Day One of NCAA East Regional
Thursday, May 6, 2010 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team was led by a pair of freshmen making their NCAA post-season debut on the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional. Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) and Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) guided Florida to a fifth place finish after carding a team score of 284 (-4) on day one.
“We have been talking about staying patient and staying on an even keel as far as emotions and I think that the entire team accomplished that very well today,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “Isabelle has been working really hard lately and it came together for her today. She was able to go out and play free without really worrying about anything and I think that paid off for her. Mia has been working on her putting and has been practicing very well recently, which I think is showing in her play out here. Overall, I'm really proud of the team. Obviously there is a lot of golf to play but it feels good to get off to a strong start.”
The duo shot identical first-round scores of 69 (-3) on Thursday to finish in a tie for sixth. Lendl began her round with a bogey on her first hole, but was able to card two birdies and an additional bogey to enter the turn at even par. After making five-straight pars, Lendl tallied three-straight birdies on her final four holes to finish at three-under. Piccio was also strong in her final nine holes after entering the turn even. She made a birdie on 13 followed by back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16.
Sophomores Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) and Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) tied each other for 43rd place after both carding a first-round score of 73 (+1). Watts began her front nine with three bogeys and two birdies to enter the turn at one-over. She made a bogey on 10 and carded five-straight pars before making a birdie on 16 to close her round. Lendl was two-under par after her first nine holes after collecting three birdies and a bogey. She concluded her first round with three bogeys on the back nine.
Sophomore Evan Jensen (Bellaire, Fla.) rounded out Florida's lineup with a two-over 74 to finish in a tie for 54th. She was even through 14 holes before she made a bogey on 15 and 17 to finish at 74.
The Gators will return to action alongside North Carolina and TCU for the second-straight day on Friday afternoon beginning at 12:20 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available at www.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com.
