Women's Golf in Sixth After Day Two of Cougar Classic
Tuesday, September 14, 2010 | Women's Golf
The Florida women's golf team fell two spots on the leaderboard and currently sit in sixth place after the second round of the Cougar Classic. The Gators have tallied a team score of 586 (292-294, +10).
“It was a bit of a frustrating day in general for the team on the putting green,” Florida Head Coach Jan Dowling said. “It seemed like we had a lot of solid putts that didn't go in. We really have to eliminate the big numbers. We lost a little bit of momentum and you come back to the field when you do things like that. We have to continue to keep our heads up, stay positive and focus on one shot at a time. Hopefully those putts will fall tomorrow and we can make a move. I think we are ready to do it but everything has not quite come together for us yet.”
The Gators were led by sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) for the second consecutive day. The Philippines native finished the afternoon in fourth place overall after shooting an even-par 72 for a total score of 142 (70-72, -2). After completing the front nine at three-over, Piccio was bogey-free the remainder of the round and closed with birdies on 15, 16 and 18. She trails co-leaders Courtney Gunter of North Carolina and Laura Wearn from Furman by two strokes heading into the final round.
Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) was solid again as she notched a 73 (+1), giving her a 36-hole score of 146 (73-73, +2). She took advantage of the par-5's throughout the day, making birdies on three of the four on the course. Jensen was two-over for the day at the turn and then played the back nine at one-under to put herself in a tie for 14th overall.
“Both Mia and Evan finished strong which helped us out mentally and helped us hopefully gain momentum heading into tomorrow,” Dowling said. “Mia turned at three-over and ended up shooting even-par. Evan was also three-over through 10 holes and birdied two of her last four holes. Good finishes by them kept us in the ballpark.”
Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) improved her score by a stroke from yesterday's round as she carded a two-over 74. Her total score of 149 (75-74, +5) ties her for 32nd with teammate Andrea Watts and seven other players. Yadloczky began slowly and found herself at two-over through six but rebounded with birdies on 8 and 10 to get back even. She bogeyed 12 and 14 before making pars the rest of the way.
Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) struggled early as she bogeyed the opening hole and then had a double bogey on the fourth. From there, she played steady golf, earning praise from her coach as she made pars on each of the last 14 holes to finish the day three-over and five-over for the tournament.
“Andrea, she was not feeling too well and she came through for us after a rough start on the first four holes,” Dowling explained.
Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) finished the day in a tie for 70th place after shooting a seven-over 79, giving her a cumulative score of 155 (76-79,+11) . She had one birdie and six bogeys along with a double bogey on the day.
North Carolina is ahead by nine strokes entering Tuesday with a team score of 570 (285-285,-6). The SEC is well-represented with South Carolina (2nd), Mississippi (3rd) and Florida (6th) all currently in the top 10.
The entire 21-team field will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET for the final round.
