Women's Golf Tied for Eighth After First Round at Mason Rudolph
Friday, September 24, 2010 | Women's Golf
The UF women's golf team is in a tie for eighth place at the conclusion of the first round of the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship. The Gators recorded a team score of 286 (-2) at the par-72, 6,281-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course in Franklin, Tenn.
“I was pretty happy with our play today,” Florida Head Coach Jan Dowling said. “We were very consistent as a team overall. We had a couple of blunders but we bounced back with birdies. I am happy with the way we performed.”
The Gators were led by junior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) who finished the afternoon tied for fifth place overall after firing a four-under 68. Watts got off to a solid start as she had two birdies and two bogeys and was even at the turn. She played a strong final nine holes, including a torrid stretch where she made birdies on 4, 5, 7 and 8 to finish at four-under for the round.
“I was hitting it well and my putts were going in,” Watts explained. “I hit 16 greens (in regulation) so I did not really have too many holes where I was forced to scramble. I was hitting it right in the middle of the fairway consistently. It's been a while since I've been able to control my driver that well. I was making good decisions and choosing the right clubs and I ended up close enough to the holes to make the putts.”
“I am very proud of Andrea,” Dowling said. “This was her first under par round as a collegiate golfer and she has been working hard. She hit great iron shots all day and she is playing well.”
Junior Marika Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) made her season debut and shot an even-par 72 that landed her in a tie for 33rd. Consistency was the theme of her performance as she had two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys while posting the Gators' second-lowest score of the day.
“I am very happy for Marika,” Dowling said. “It was her first competitive round in four-and-a-half months and I know her expectations for herself are high but she did not let that affect her play and she played a solid round for us today. She got into a little trouble off the tee a couple times but she was very consistent with her irons.”
Junior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) had a solid start as she followed a bogey at 15 with back-to-back birdies at 17 and 18 to move to one-under through nine holes. She bogeyed No. 1, triple bogeyed No. 4 and added another bogey on No. 6 but rallied to birdie the seventh and eighth holes to close with a one-over 73.
Senior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) struggled at the beginning of her round with a bogey on her first and third holes but she bounced back with the first eagle of the season for the Gators on the par-4, 390-yard 13th. It was one of five eagles recorded on the tournament's first day. A bogey on 16 left her at one-over entering the turn. Yadloczky concluded her round with one birdie, seven pars and a bogey to end up at one-over.
Sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) was the third Gator to finish with a one-over 73 in the first round. She had an eventful opening eight holes as she made three birdies and three bogeys with a double bogey during that span. Piccio settled down though and played her last 10 holes at one-under to conclude the round with a 73.
Yadloczky will be the first Gator to tee off for the second round of the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship at 9:00 a.m. (ET) on Saturday. She will be followed by Evan Jensen at 9:09, Mia Piccio at 9:18, Marika Lendl at 9:27 and Andrea Watts at 9:36.
