The No. 10 Gator men's golf team used rounds of 291 (+3) and 276 (-12) to take a 10 stroke lead into the final round of The Bake at The Ocean Course. For the day, the Gators were led by junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) who sits in first place after firing a two round total of 137 (-7) at the Par-72 Kiawah Ocean Course.
“This was probably our first really good day of the year,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “The morning round was solid and the afternoon round was good enough where you can consider the whole day a success.”
McCumber, who leads the tournament by two strokes over Sam Love of UAB, played solid golf all day while carding rounds of 69 (-3) and 68 (-4). In the morning round, McCumber carded a 69 with four birdies, three bogeys and the team's first eagle of the season. During the afternoon, McCumber was more consistent in his approach using five birdies against a lone bogey to head into the final round at seven-under.
“Tyler had his good stuff for the first time all year,” Alexander explained. “He's been scoring good for us all season but today he wasn't having to scramble as much to shoot low.”
Junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) also finished in the red for UF wrapping up day one in 141 strokes (-3). After shooting 74 on his first 18, Vogel came out strong on the second 18 using a quick three birdies to make the turn at 3-under. Vogel kept up the hot play coming in with three more birdies against a single bogey to finish the second round with a 5-under score of 67.
After an opening round 76, freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) recovered nicely in the afternoon firing a career-best round of 69 (-3) to move into a tie for 11th overall with a two round total of 145 (+1). After an up and down first 18, Banks put together an impressive second round where he made four birdies and 14 pars to climb back into contention.
Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) also finished the two rounds with a one-over score of 145. For the day, Mou made nine birdies against two bogeys and four doubles.
Rounding out the day for UF were J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.), and Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) who each had scores of 75 and 73.
“T.J. and Eric both had nice bounce back rounds in the afternoon,” Alexander said. “As a whole, I thought no one played poorly in the afternoon. We're looking forward to trying to keep that momentum and seeing what we can do tomorrow. “
The Gators will return to the course tomorrow morning when they tee off at 9:00 a.m. Live scoring for the final round will be available through www.golfstat.com.
