UF Women's Golf, Jensen Hold Leads After First Round Of Betsy Rawls Invitational
Monday, October 31, 2011 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team sits atop the leader board after day one of the 2011 Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin, Texas after posting a three-under 285. The Gators were led by senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) who claimed first-place individually with a four-under 68 after the first round. All five golfers in Florida's lineup finished in the top-26 after completion of round one.
“It was a great start. I'm very happy,” head coach Jan Dowling said. “We were very patient and that's what we've worked on. We also took advantage of the par-fives. As a team, we shot eight-under on the par-fives.”
Jensen's first round total of 68 lands her in a tie for 11th all time for an individual round in school history. On the day, Jensen made six birdies against two bogeys. Jensen holds a one-shot lead over Kent State's Mercedes Germino.
“Evan played great today,” Dowling explained. “She was three-under on par-fives while playing through the pain of an elbow injury. An elbow injury is extremely tough to play with in golf.”
Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) continued her stellar play with her third round under-par during the fall season. Piccio, who is in a tie for seventh place, carded a first round 71 (-1).
“Mia showed a lot of maturity today,” the coach said of Piccio. “She hit 16 greens and hit a 30-footer on the 17th hole. I'm proud of the way she's been playing.”
Senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) matched her best round of the season with an even-par 72. Watts claims a tie for twelfth place entering the second round.
Both junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) and Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) scored a two over 74 and are currently tied for 26th.
“I truly believe that anyone in our lineup can win a tournament individually,” Dowling acknowledged.
Lena Weichselgartner (Munich, Germany), who is playing as an individual, competed in her first collegiate event. The freshman carded a first round 78 (+6). She is tied for 58th.
Florida, the tournaments top-ranked team according the Golf World/NGCA Coaches' Poll, will take a three-shot lead over the tournament host, University of Texas, into second round action, which continues tomorrow, November 1.
