Piccio Leading Through Two Rounds At Betsy Rawls Invitational
Tuesday, November 1, 2011 | Women's Golf
Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) led the charge during round two of the 2011 Betsy Rawls Invitational with a two-under (70) second round. Piccio claimed first-place individually while helping the team remain in serious contention for a tournament crown. The Gators will enter the final round in second-place after posting a two-day total of 589 (+13).
“Today was not the round we were looking for but we have a great shot at winning this tournament and that's all you can ask for,” head coach Jan Dowling admitted. “We compounded a few mistakes today but we'll make adjustments and be ready to play tomorrow.”
Piccio, who has a 54-hole total of 141 (-3), had an up-and-down round, but finished strong finishing three-under on her final seven holes. Piccio also added her first eagle of the season.
“Mia's round was great,” Dowling said. “We've been talking about maturity and patience and she exemplified that today.”
“I didn't panic and I stayed calm,” Piccio explained. “It was really important to be patient and stay positive.”
Piccio will be seeking her first collegiate individual victory tomorrow when she tees off at 8:51 a.m. ET at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
“I would love to win my first collegiate event,” Piccio said. “I have to continue to stay patient and stay positive when facing adversity and just go out there and own it.”
Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) will enter the final round in a tie for 13th. The senior shot a second round 79, giving her a total of 147 (+3) through 54 holes. Jensen recorded her third eagle of the season during the second round.
Senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) is six-over (72-78-150) going into the final day of play and is tied for 28th.
Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) is tied for 33rd with a 151 (+7) and Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) is tied for 39th with a 153 (+9).
Lena Weichselgartner (Munich, Germany), who is competing as an individual, is tied for 52nd after posting a tournament total of 155 (+11).
Florida is trailing tournament host, University of Texas, by eight strokes entering the final round. A shotgun start is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. tomorrow morning.
