Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship

Evan Jensen Leads Gator Golfers in Day Two of Allstate Sugar Bowl
Tuesday, March 1, 2011 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Florida women's golf team is sitting in 12th place after the second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship. The Gators recorded a team score of 599 (298-301, +23) and have two players—Isabelle Lendl and Mia Piccio—in the top 15 individually heading into Tuesday's final round.
“Our ball-striking was not as good as yesterday but still good,” head coach Jan Dowling said. “We were a little sloppy around the greens. Our short game was not sharp and we did not get up-and-down from some pretty simple places. That was the difference between today and yesterday.”
The Gators were led by junior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) who fired a 74 (+2) on day two, moving her up eight spots to a tie for 39th with a 36-hole total of 150 (+6). Jensen was solid early, recording five consecutive pars and then birdied the par-5 sixth. Back-to-back bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes along with another bogey on 11 dropped her to two-over. She went birdie-bogey on 13 and 14, and later bogey-birdie on 16 and 17 before ending with a par.
Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) kept herself in contention, shooting a 75 (+3) that has her in a tie for 12th overall. She began the day with a bogey but then delivered the Gators' third eagle of the year on the second hole.
“She is very good at weighing the risk/reward,” Dowling commented. “She also can be aggressive at the right time. On No. 2, she hit it (the green) in two and it was a good time to go for it. The pin was in a good spot and it was downwind and the tee was up so it was playing a little bit shorter. She hit a 3-wood to about 10 feet and then made the 10-footer for eagle.”
Lendl bogeyed her next hole but recovered with a birdie on No. 7 before a bogey on No. 8 left her even at the turn. The Gator sophomore bogeyed 12, 14 and 15 and shot par the other three holes on the back nine.
“She bogeyed one of her par-5's but she is five-under on the par-5's so far,” Dowling noted. “She thinks really well and she is a very good course manager out there. Her wedge game has been very good. Yesterday, every time she had a wedge in her hand, she made birdies so that tells you a little bit about her wedge game.”
Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) matched teammate Lendl with a 75 of her own as she landed in a tie for 15th at day's end. For the second straight day, she played solid, consistent golf and avoided anything worse than a bogey. Piccio and Jensen are two of 23 golfers in the 95-player field to not make anything worse than a bogey over the course of the first two rounds. Piccio had one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys on the day.
Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) improved her score four strokes from yesterday as she carded a 77 (+5) that placed her in a tie for 80th. After three pars to open play, Yadloczky double bogeyed her fourth hole and had two more bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7 to fall to four-over. The senior recovered with a birdie on the par-3 eighth and closed the round with eight pars and two bogeys.
Megan Pak (Bradenton, Fla.) shot an 83 (+11) in her second round. She was four-over through 13 before registering two double bogeys and three bogeys on her final five holes.
Top-ranked Alabama leads by four strokes entering Tuesday's final round with a team score of 582 (295-287,+6).
“Our mindset is good,” Dowling declared. “Individually, there have been a lot of positives. Evan has hit it really solid and just has not scored. She has worked hard on her short game and one of these days she will break through. Jessica is hitting her driver really well and really accurate. She is hitting solid golf shots and she could not say that a couple weeks ago. Isabelle is hitting it more solid and obviously her round yesterday should be a confidence-booster for her. Mia is playing pretty consistently as well. Megan played better today than she did in the first round. Everybody should be able to walk away from these two rounds with some positives and we are going to build on that for our last round and the rest of the spring.”
The entire 17-team field will have a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. ET for the final round. Florida is paired with Purdue and Tennessee and will begin play on holes 9 through 11.
