Freshman Mizereck Wins Two Events To Cap Off UCF Invitational
Sunday, March 27, 2011 | Track and Field
Freshman Florida middle distance runner Matt Mizereck (Tallahassee, Fla.) won two events on Saturday and the Gators turned in another strong performance to cap off the two-day UCF Invitational hosted by the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
Over the course of the weekend, the Gators captured five total events and set one school record (Jeremy Postin – men's weight throw). It marked Florida's final tune-up before playing host to the 67th Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium Friday-Saturday, April 1-2.
The meet served as the outdoor season opener for much of the Florida track and field squad.
Mizereck opened the day by winning the men's 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:52.93, before also claiming the men's 800-meter run in a time of 1:51.88. He accomplished the feat in what was his first collegiate track and field competition. Mizereck directed a 1-2-3 finish by the Gator men in the 800-meter run. Sean Obinwa (Tampa, Fla.) placed second in a time of 1:52.61, while Luc Lawrence (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) placed third in 1:52.84.
Freshman sprinter Darshay Davis (Miami, Fla.) competed in both the women's 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, placing third in the 100m in 11.80 (-0.9) and sixth in the 200m in 23.90 (+0.7).
Sophomore jumper Alexis Muniz (Coconut Creek, Fla.) nearly matched her personal best in the women's high jump, tying for third place with a leap of 1.63m/5-4.25, while junior thrower Fidela James (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed second in the women's shot put with a toss of 15.33m/50-3.50.
Florida returns to action Friday and Saturday when it plays host to the 67th Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.
