Gators and T.J. Vogel Lead Charleston Shootout After Day One
Tuesday, February 28, 2012 | Men's Golf
The Gator men's golf team used rounds of 282 (-6) and 275 (-13) to hold a 12 shot advantage over Augusta State heading into the final round of the Charleston Shootout at the Links at Stono Ferry. For the day, UF was led by a trio of golfers, juniors T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) and Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and freshman J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.), who sit in the top-10 after two rounds of play. Vogel currently sits in first after a two-round total of 134 (-10), while McCumber and Tomlinson are tied for fourth and sixth, respectively.
“We had another great afternoon round similar to what we did at TPC earlier in the spring,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Scoring conditions were good after some rain early in the morning and we did a nice job of putting four solid scores together in each round.”
Vogel, who leads Jacobo Pastor of Charleston Southern by three strokes, rebounded nicely after his day started on a sour note with a bogey at the par-4 first. The junior was quick to recover, carding birdies on holes 3, 5 and 8 to go out in 34 (-2). From there, Vogel used eight pars and a birdie to finish his opening round three-under (69). Vogel kept the momentum from his solid opening round going into the second round as he made five birdies and an eagle to post a season-best round of 65 (-7).
“T.J.'s really been playing great golf for us most of the year and he did it again today,” Alexander explained.
Fellow junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) also put on a solid performance for the Orange and Blue finishing the first day at 140 (-4). McCumber used five birdies against a bogey to finish the morning session with a 68 (-4). In the second round, McCumber overcame an early double and posted an even-par round of 72.
Freshman J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) was the third Gator to finish the day in the red closing with a two-round total of 141 (-3). After an up-and-down first round where he finished with a one-over 73, Tomlinson righted the ship on his second 18 using four birdies en route to a 68 (-4).
“It was nice to see J.D. play solidly,” Alexander said. “I've never doubted his abilities and it was good to have him back out there performing today.”
The remaining trio of seniors Zach Lee (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) also helped to contribute to the Gators' lead. Lee and Furci counted first round scores of 72 (E) and 73 (+1), respectively, before struggling in the afternoon, while Banks overcame a tough morning round to fire a solid two-under round of 70 to close out day one.
The Gators will return to the course tomorrow morning when they tee off at 9:30 a.m. Live scoring for the final round will be available through www.golfstat.com.
