The University of Florida men's golf team used a final round 287 to finish 15 strokes ahead of Augusta State to capture its third tournament victory of the season at the Charleston Shootout at the Links at Stono Ferry. For the day, UF was led by junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) who captured his second individual title of the season after finishing the tournament with an impressive three-round total of 206 (-10 ).
“It was another good, solid, day out there for us,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “We're very happy to get the win on a course that played a lot tougher today.”
“T.J.'s win was awesome,” Alexander continued. “He's been incredibly good for us and I don't see why it has to stop. He's incredibly consistent and just has a drive to get better every time out.”
Vogel, who now has six consecutive top-8 finishes, posted a final round 72 (E) to claim the victory by a stroke over defending tournament champion Jacobo Paston of Charleston Southern. After making the turn in one-over 37, Vogel dropped another stroke on the par-3 11th to fall out of the lead. The junior didn't back down and recovered nicely making birdies on two of his next four holes and closing with a trio of pars going out to clinch the victory.
Fellow junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) tallied his second top-five finish of the season after a three-day total of 211 (-5). In his final found, McCumber carded an eagle against two bogeys on his first 17 holes before closing the day on a high note with a birdie at the par-4 18th.
Freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) fired the low round of the day for the Gators using five birdies against three bogeys to card his second-consecutive round of 70 (-2). For the tournament, Banks finished at 215 (-1) en route to a tie for ninth, his first-career top-10 finish.
Freshman J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) also earned his first-career top-10 finish with a tie for ninth. Tomlinson, who posted opening rounds of 73 and 68, closed his tournament with an eagle and four bogeys for a final total of 216 (-1).
“It was nice to see both of the freshman finish up in the top-10,” Alexander explained. “They both gave us nice contributions throughout the week and we're hoping for more of that as the season goes along.”
Seniors Zach Lee (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) rounded out the Gators lineup with final round scores of 76 and 81, respectively.
The Gators will return to action on Friday, March 9, when they compete in the S.H. Collegiate Masters at Southern Highlands in Las Vegas.
“We're going to enjoy this win but we're looking forward to going out to Vegas and seeing what we've got,” Alexander said.
