Freshmen Lead Gator Golfers on Day Two of SH Collegiate Masters
Sunday, March 11, 2012 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team used solid rounds from freshmen J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) and Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) to finish the second day of the SH Collegiate Masters with a 295 (+7). For the tournament, the Gators sit in ninth place after two rounds at Southern Highlands.
“The one really positive thing out of today was how our three, four and five guys played well and kept us in the tournament,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “We're one good round away from a good showing at a real good tournament and hopefully we can go out tomorrow and put one together.”
Tomlinson was the lone Gator in the red finishing his second round with a one-under 71. Tomlinson got off a quick start making the turn in 34 (-2) thanks to a trio of birdies against a bogey. After a bogey on 10 that dropped him to -1, Tomlinson rallied making birdies on 12 and 13 to get to -3 on the day. Tomlinson gave the three strokes back with a triple on the par-4 15th but responded quickly with a birdie on 16 and a pair of pars to close his day. Tomlinson heads into the final round in a tie for fourth, four strokes behind Logan McCracken of Texas Tech.
Banks finished his second round with a one-over 73. After using a pair of birdies against a pair of bogeys to go out in even-par 36, Banks finished his second nine with eight pars and a bogey to sit in a tie for 32nd overall.
Redshirt senior Zach Lee (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) recorded the third score for the Orange and Blue, using three birdies against three bogeys and a double to shoot a 74 (+2).
Junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) sits in a tie for 26th place after an up-and-down round. After starting with a bogey, Vogel made a birdie on two before going four-over over his next two holes before another birdie on the par-4 fifth. Vogel closed his front nine on a sour note with a triple on nine to go out in 42. On his homeward half, Vogel went one-under making two birdies against a bogey to close his day with a 77 (+5).
Rounding out the Gator lineup was junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) who carded a 78 (+6).
The Gators return to the course tomorrow morning when they tee off at 8 a.m. PST. Live stats will be available through golfstat.com.
