Gators in Third Place at NCAA East Regional After Two Rounds
Saturday, May 12, 2012 | Women's Golf
The No.12 University of Florida women's golf team carded a nine-over 297, giving them back-to-back solid rounds at the NCAA East Regional in State College, Pa. The Gators, who have a tournament total of 591 (+15), held steady as they will begin the third round in the same position as they began the second, in third place.
“It was a solid round. There were no big mistakes, which was good to see,” Head coach Jan Dowling said. “We had five players in it the whole day and obviously Camilla had a very, very good round of Golf today. She really hit the ball well and putted well.”
Freshman Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) handed in the low round for the Gators with a one-under 71 after a long birdie putt on the final hole, giving her a 36-hole total of 147 (+3). Hedberg had four birdies along with three bogeys. The Spaniard will enter the final round in a tie for 13th.
“I played very good, very solid. What I didn't do yesterday that I did today was the speed of my putting was much, much better. I stayed patient, especially on the back nine,” Hedberg explained.
Senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) provided another solid round with a two-over 74, giving her a 146 (+2) through two rounds. Jensen, tied for 10th, has 25 pars through 36 holes.
“Evan played 16 great holes of golf today,” Dowling said. “Overall, Evan did what she does. She's a consistent even keeled golfer and she was just being herself and that's a really, really great thing.”
Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) shot a second round 75 (+3) to go along with her first round 74 (+2). Piccio recorded one birdie against four bogeys. Piccio will begin round three in a tie for 31st.
With a two-day total of 150 (+6), senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) sits in a tie for 40th entering the last round at the Penn State Blue Course. After shooting six-over on the front nine, Watts bounced back to shoot even par on the back nine.
Similarly to Watts, junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) bounced back to shoot a 77 (+5) despite shooting five-over on the front nine. Lendl has a tournament total of 158 (+14) and will begin the third round in a tie for 96th.
“We're going to be in the final group so that's a great opportunity for us,” Dowling said “We're going to continue on with our game plan on the golf course. We don't need to be doing anything special, just playing a round of really solid golf. We just need to continue doing the things we've done all week.”
“We're going to just keep doing what we're doing, playing our balls how we know to and continue to do what we've been doing,” Hedberg stated about entering the final round being in contention.
No. 25 South Carolina, who entered the day in first, will remain in the top spot following a second round 294 (+6). The Gamecocks own a 7-stroke lead over No. 2 Alabama. Katerina Ruzickova of Texas A&M leads all individuals after posting a second round 73 (+1). Ruzickova, who is four-under for the tournament, held the lead after the first round, as well.
Lendl will tee off first for the Gators in the second round at 8:56 a.m. ET. All UF members will tee off of hole No. 1.
The top eight teams and two individuals not on those eight teams will advance from each regional.
