Hedberg Leads Gators on Day Two of NCAA Championship
Thursday, May 24, 2012 | Women's Golf
The No. 12 University of Florida women's golf team fired a five-over 293 to move into a tie for 15th after the second round of the NCAA Championship. UF, who entered the round tied for 18th, was led by SEC Freshman of the Year, Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain), who shot a three-under 69 during the second round at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
"Today was a positive improvement and we are moving in the right direction,” head coach Jan Dowling said. “The team stayed patient and navigated the firm, fast greens a lot better. We must continue this the next two days as the course dries out. It becomes even more imperative to be on the correct side of the pins as the greens get firmer. The team also started and finished our rounds very strong. I like that as a coach. We stayed patient out there, and never let up.”
Hedberg, whose three-under 69 tied for the third best round on the day, has shot a combined four-under on par fives through the first two rounds. The Spaniard carded five birdies against two bogeys. Hedberg is tied for 16th after the first 36 holes with a 145 (+1).
“Camilla played a very solid round for us that our team really needed. Making five birdies out there shows that she putted well and obviously hit it pretty darn good, too,” Dowling noted.
Senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.), who handed in the best first round score for the Gators, had the second best round on day two with a one-over 73. Jensen has a two-day total of 147 (+3) and will enter the third round in a tie for 32nd.
“Evan continues to be a great senior leader for us. Her putting improved today and she was very consistent overall,” said Dowling.
Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) handed in a solid 74 (+2) in the second round. Piccio, with a 150 (+6), will enter the third round in a tie for 64th.
To round out Florida's lineup, senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) carded a 77 (+5) and 78 (+6), respectively. Watts is tied for 82nd with a 153 (+9) and Lendl is tied for 121st.
No. 2 Alabama held on to the top spot on the leaderboard following round two. The Tide shot a three-under 285 for a total of 571 (-5) and lead No. 1 UCLA by 11 strokes. Brooke Pancake of Alabama leads all individuals after carding a two-day total of 138 (-6).
Lendl will tee off first for the Gators in the second round at 9:39 a.m. ET. All UF members will tee off of hole No. 10 to begin the second round.
“We are looking forward to a morning time tomorrow,” Dowling continued. The greens will be a little more receptive, and we have plans to post a solid number to continue climbing that leaderboard.”
