UF Men's Golf in Second After Two Rounds at the SunTrust Gator Invitational

The University of Florida men's golf team is in a tie for second place after the first two rounds of their home tournament, the SunTrust Gator Invitational, on Saturday, February 9 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. The team shot a 570 (+10) on the day.

Florida was in first place after the first round, but ended up in third after the completion of the latter 18 holes.

"We knew today was going to be a long day," head coach Buddy Alexander said. "We did the best we could."

Sophomores Thomas Stewart (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) were the lowest scorers for UF on the first day of action. The pair both shot a 141 (+1) for the first two rounds, good enough for a tie for eighth place. Stewart is playing the tournament as an individual and his score does count towards the team score.

Seniors Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) were not far behind as they both recorded a 142 (+2). Both are tied for 13th place.

In his first tournament of the 2012-13 season, sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) was three-over par. Banks is currently tied for 22nd place. He is playing as an individual, as well.

The Gators led the field after one round of play with a team score of 282 (+2). Stewart was on top of the individual leaderboard after his first-round 68 (-2).

His fellow classmate Tomlinson was in a tie for third place after shooting a 69 (-1). McCumber also was one-under par.

Vogel, redshirt sophomore Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico), and Banks all recorded a 72 (+2) for the first 18 holes. The trio was tied for 25th place.

UF was led by Vogel in the second round of play. The senior was three-under par before registering a triple-bogey on the 16th hole. He finished at even-par.

Tomlinson was two-over for the second round, while McCumber and Gavino were one stroke back of the Gainesville native.

Senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) shot a 150 (+10) as an individual and junior Bill Anderson (DeLand, Fla.), in his first tournament of his Florida career, shot a 157 (+17).

“We are very capable of playing a very good round of golf tomorrow,” Alexander said. “There's no doubt we can shoot a low score.”

Play will conclude tomorrow with the final round. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available on www.golftstat.com.
