Sunday, February 24, 2013 | Men's Golf
Led by senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.), the fourth-ranked University of Florida men's golf team is in a tie for sixth place after the first day of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, February 24. Vogel carded a 69 (-3) for the first 18 holes of play.
“We did a few good things today,” head coach Buddy Alexander said.
As a team, UF recorded a 292 (+4) on the first round at the par-72, 6,910 yard course. The team is tied for sixth with Tulsa and UAB. Florida trails North Florida, the host and first round-leader, by 16 strokes going into tomorrow's second round.
“North Florida had a great day on their home course,” Alexander stated. “We are going to have to have a special day tomorrow to be with them. I think we can do better tomorrow.”
Vogel came out firing to start the first round. The Cooper City, Fla. native recorded an eagle and two birdies against one bogey over the first nine holes. Vogel finished the back nine at even-par. He is currently tied for sixth place.
Alexander praised Vogel's strong play, saying, “T.J. Vogel had a nice day.”
Fellow classmate Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) completed the round in 72 strokes (E). Like Vogel, McCumber registered an eagle on the day. He recorded a three on the par-five eighth hole. The Ponte Vedra, Fla. native is in a tie for 25th place after the first 18 holes of action.
Sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) was one-over par for the first round. He sits in a tie for 33rd place.
Fellow sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada), in his first tournament of the season as a member of the Florida lineup, recorded a six-over par.
Redshirt sophomore Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) rounded out the Gator lineup, tallying an 82 (+10) on the day.
Freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) fared well, playing as an individual. In his first tournament of the spring season, the rookie had four birdies over three bogeys for a 71 (-1). Crouch is in a tie for 17th place.
Play will resume tomorrow morning at the Sawgrass Country Club. Florida will tee off at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available on www.golftstat.com.
