Gators Wrap Up Regular Season With Fourth Place Showing at Gary Koch
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team finished in fourth place at the Gary Koch Invitational, its final tournament of the 2012-13 regular season, on Tuesday, April 9 at the Old Memorial Golf Club. Florida recorded an 866 for the three-round event at the par-72, 7,389 yard course.
“It was a much different golf course today,” head coach Buddy Alexander commented. “The tees were a little bit back, wind created some issues, and scoring was a little bit higher. We had a reasonably solid day, though, and held our spot.”
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) put together the best individual score for the Gators. McCumber finished the final round in 70 strokes (-2) and was even-par for the tournament, coming in a tie for 16th place. The senior captain showed great resilience in the final two rounds, going five-under par after an opening round-77.
Freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.), senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.), and J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) all finished the event in 218 strokes (+2). Crouch matched his best 54-hole score of his young career and Mou tallied his best three-round score since The Bake at the Ocean Course in October 2011. The trio tied for 19th place.
Sophomores Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) rounded out the UF lineup, registering a 223 (+7) for the tournament. Banks tied for 38th place.
Junior Bill Anderson (DeLand, Fla.), playing as an individual, was 10-over par for the event. Anderson was playing in his second event in his University of Florida career.
“Our last 36 holes were okay, but we need to get off to a better start,” Alexander stated. “We will be ready for the conference tournament in a couple weeks. Until then, we are all looking forward to watching T.J. Vogel in the Masters.”
With the conclusion of the regular season, Florida begins postseason play with the SEC Championship. The conference championship will be held at the Seaside Golf Club in St. Simons Island from April 19-21.
“I still believe that our best golf is ahead of us,” Alexander concluded.
