Gator Women’s Golf Maintains Second Place After Two Rounds of the SunTrust Gator Invitational
Saturday, March 7, 2015 | Women's Golf
The Gator women's golf team remains in second place after day two at its lone home tournament, the SunTrust Gator Invitational, held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. As a team, Florida recorded a team total of +19 (299) to bring its 36-hole total to 596. Sophomore Karolina Vlckova carded two birdies on the day to lead the Orange and Blue by tying her season-best score of +1 (71), and is tied for second place heading into the final round.
The Gators' Round 1 low scorer, Kelly Grassel, overcame five bogeys on the back-nine to finish one stroke behind teammate Vlckova with a 36-hole total of 146 and is tied for fourth place.
The 15-team field features three of Golfweek's top-25 teams, with No. 11 Arizona (585) holding onto the lead after the second round, leading Florida by 11 strokes at the 6,002-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course. The third and final round is set for a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday at the par-70 course.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' second-round play:
“I didn't look at the scoring all day today and had I not known, I would have thought we scored better. That's the best thing about today, we played tough and we were present mentally the whole day. Our energy was good.”
On what the team can improve on in the final round:
“Some days you don't have your best stuff and it was a little like that today. I've seen a few mistakes that come with managing the expectations of the week, things that are uncharacteristic for us. Our team is getting better every day and certainly competing on this tough golf course is helping us learn and become better.”
On the expectations for the final round:
“We are very capable and my hope for tomorrow is that we come out and have fun, play free, execute well and see what happens.”
Sophomore Karolina Vlckova:
On leading the team in Round 2:
“I started with a good attitude and, even though it's a home tournament and our home golf course, I was ready to go and play like it was any other golf course because every day on the course can be different. I tried not to put pressure on myself, just because this is our home course.”
On making adjustments for the final round:
“I want to stay more patient tomorrow. Even though I tried to not put too much pressure on myself, I had some moments on the course where I should have been more patient and wait for different opportunities and use those.”
