The Florida women's golf team opened the 2015-16 season over the past three days in Charleston, S.C., at the Cougar Classic. Sophomore Taylor Tomlinson was tied on top of the individual leaderboard throughout the tournament and took home a share of the individual title on Tuesday. Tomlinson posted back-to-back collegiate-best scores of 68 in the first two rounds, on her way to the title with a collegiate-best 54-hole score of six-under (210).
As a team, Florida took fourth among the 20-team field by carding an 869 total, just three strokes shy of its 2014-15 season-best mark. Senior Ursa Orehek posted a collegiate-best three-day total of 220, on her way to finish T17, another personal-best. Junior Maria Torres also represented the Orange and Blue in the top-20, as she birdied the 18th hole for a 219 total and finished tied for 15th-place.
Arkansas took home the team title with the only under-par total of the tournament, a -7 (857). Clemson golfer Alice Hewson tied with Tomlinson to take home co-medalist honors at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Club 6,204-yard course.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' performance at the season-opening tournament:
“I'm happy with the effort of our team this week. We played solid overall, and I saw a lot of improvements from the returnees. Today was a tougher scoring day. We gave away too many shots on the scorable holes and par-fives, which prevented us from making more of a run. But, I feel like we left with a good sense of where we can improve, and I know this team is committed to working hard and improving. It's great that we get to compete again so soon.”
On Taylor Tomlinson's performance:
“I really couldn't be happier for Taylor. It's a huge step in her progression, to make all of the birdies she did this week, to get in contention and then finish it off. She really committed to improving her putting over the summer and it paid off for her this week.”
Sophomore Taylor Tomlinson:
On her play throughout the tournament:
“I played really well, just steady and solid all week. My putting really helped me the first two days, I made a lot of birdie putts which was nice. They didn't fall as much today but I was still able to get it done.”
On winning her first individual collegiate tournament:
“It's really exciting. I know a lot of really good players – some don't even get a college win under their belt, so to get it, especially the first tournament of the year, is really nice. I'm excited to see where the rest of the season takes me.”
