PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The Gator women's golf team held steady on Tuesday to finish third at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, in Palos Verdes, Calif., its best finish at the event since the 2008 season.
The No. 12 Gators carded a Round 3 team score of +7 (291) for the second straight day to bring their 54-hole total to +17 (869), five strokes shy of second-place finisher No. 11 Alabama. No. 15 Washington pulled away from the 16-team field on the final day, finishing six-over par (858) to secure the team title.
Once again, juniors Karolina Vlckova and Maria Torres showed off their consistency with four birdies apiece on the final day of the 54-hole event. Vlckova secured her third top-10 finish of the season, tying for 10th by recording rounds of 72-72-72. Torres ended the round carding birdies on the 16th and 18th holes to finish at even with the Gators' low round of the day and tied for 13th. Sophomore Taylor Tomlinson and freshman Sam Wagner joined Vlckova and Torres in the top-20, as they tied for 20th at +8 (221).
Monica Vaughn from Arizona State scored the lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 65 to take home the individual crown at -4 (209), at the par-71, 6,017-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Assistant Coach Janice Olivencia:
On the Gators' finish:
"Today was fun watching this team get after it, the greens were fast, shots were tough, but we were up for the task. We had a great start, we challenged the leaders all day and came close. I couldn't ask more from our team this week, as the effort level from them throughout the event was exceptional. The exciting part is, we know we can get better and this week will give us the confidence to keep working hard. Coach Glaser and I are very proud of this team."
Junior Karolina Vlckova:
On her top-10 finish:
"This was a great tournament, and it played tough out there all three days. The greens were very fast, which is the one thing I struggled with. Overall, I'm happy with the way I fought until the end. I'm happy with the top-10 finish, because it tells me I'm heading in the right direction. I'm very happy for our team finishing third, it reflects how hard we've been working."
